How to measure perimeter on a PDF

Trace a closed shape with the Area tool, then choose Perim. Deta shows the total length around the boundary.

Before you start

Set or calibrate the page scale. Perimeter is the full length around a closed boundary. It is useful for skirting, edging, and room outlines. You need permission to add markups.

Steps

  1. Select Area (A) in the left toolbar.
  2. Click each corner around the boundary in order.
  3. Click the first point again, or press Enter, to close the shape.
  4. Select the finished area markup with Select (V).
  5. In the properties bar, choose Display → Perim. Choose Both to show area and perimeter together.
  6. Read the label on the drawing. Use Scale → Drawing Units to change the length units or precision.

If you already drew an area, start at step 4. There is no separate perimeter tool to activate.

The Display control in the Area properties bar, with Area, Perim, and Both.

Select Perim for the boundary length, or Both for area and perimeter together.

Check your result

A rectangle 5 m by 4 m has a perimeter of 18 m: 5 + 4 + 5 + 4. Its area is 20 m². These are different quantities, even though they come from the same outline.

The perimeter includes the closing edge. If you only need one wall, use Dimension. For a round boundary, use the circumference guide.

Troubleshooting

  • The label shows square units: select Perim, not Area.
  • The length includes an unwanted edge: a perimeter always closes the outline. It is not an open-path measurement.
  • The result is wrong: check the scale on the current page and the vertices of the boundary.
