How to measure area on a PDF

Trace a closed boundary with the Area tool to measure a floor, room, or other region. Deta calculates its area using the page scale.

Before you start

Set or calibrate the page scale. Decide which boundary you need: for example, the inside faces of the walls for a room's floor area. You need permission to add markups.

Steps

  1. Select Area in the left toolbar, or press A.
  2. Click the first corner of the boundary.
  3. Click each remaining corner in order around the region. Avoid crossing the boundary over itself.
  4. Click the first point again to close the shape, or press Enter to finish. On touch devices, use the drawing confirmation control.
  5. Select the finished markup. In the properties bar, choose Display → Area. Choose Both if you also want the perimeter.
  6. Use Scale → Drawing Units to choose the area unit and precision. Select the shape and drag a vertex if its boundary needs adjustment.

Press Esc to cancel an unfinished area.

Check your result

A rectangular region 5 m long and 4 m wide should measure 20 m². Area is measured in square units; the distance around the same region is 18 m.

The result covers the closed boundary you traced.

Troubleshooting

  • The label shows a length: change Display from Perim to Area or Both.
  • The result is too large or too small: check the page scale. Scale errors compound for area: doubling the length scale makes the area four times larger.
  • The boundary is wrong: select the shape and adjust its vertices. Trace corners in order, without self-intersections.
